Like Madonna, 4 million over 50s see turning 50 as a time for new and exciting challenges

Madonna, who reaches her 50th birthday this Saturday (16 August), will be following in the footsteps of others who have reached this landmark age.

They are keen on travelling the world and see turning 50 as a time for exciting new challenges and adventures, research from Alliance and Leicester reveals.

While Madonna's Sticky and Sweet' tour doesn't venture as far afield as Australia or New Zealand, one in four people (26%) over 50 are planning a trip 'down under' and a brave 3% are even thinking of conquering Antarctica.

Emma Walkley, Current Account Manager at Alliance and Leicester said: "For many people, turning 50 is a significant milestone and a time when people gain a new lease of life.

This can certainly be said for Madonna who, on the eve of her 50th, is about to embark on a challenging world tour.

"While Madonna is strutting her stuff on stage, Alliance andamp; Leicester's Premier 50 Current Account holders can take the whole world by storm thanks to annual worldwide travel insurance, and exclusive health benefits that will give great peace of mind in this new and exciting stage in their lives.

"Our research has shown that many of today's over 50s work hard to stay healthy and to maintain their fitness in the later stages of life.

It also seems that people want peace of mind when it comes to their health issues, with more than three quarters (78%) saying that getting medical advice is 'extremely important' to them." Emma Walkley continues: "The health benefits we offer combined with worldwide travel insurance allows our customers the flexibility and reassurance they need to lead life to the full." The research also reveals that the over 50s like to push the boundaries with over a million saying they would like to take part in a bungee jump or skydive within the next five to ten years and one in ten (9%) would like to try '4x4 off- roading'.

Other activities the over 50s have on their to-do lists include: Performing on stage in front of a large audience.
