Students really mean business
Budding entrepreneurs are being helped by volunteers from BUPA Health Insurance to become business hotshots.
As part of the Index, BITC introduced the Climate Change Champion award for the first time this year to reward those companies that go the extra mile when it comes to reducing their carbon footprint.
Of the 66 companies taking part, BUPA Care Services was one of just eight given the accolade.
Jeremy Rix, energy manager at BUPA Care Services, said: "We are delighted to receive this award and recognition.
"We now have a full-time energy surveyor and have put in place a system to monitor our energy consumption on a month-by-month basis involving maintenance staff taking meter readings every month, which allows us to accurately calculate our carbon footprint." BUPA Care Services has reduced the amount of energy consumed per bed in its care homes with initiatives such as an energy efficiency poster campaign to remind staff and residents to turn off lights and appliances when not in use, as well as investment in efficiency measures such as insulation and low energy lighting.
Jeremy added: "One of the major challenges ahead is to encourage and assist staff in developing more of their own energy efficiency initiatives.
This will involve providing homes with detailed monthly feedback reports showing how much energy they used in the last month, comparing this with the budget, weather conditions and the performance of other homes nearby." BITC was established 25 years ago with the aim of supporting and challenging companies to behave responsibly and have a positive impact on the communities in which they operate.
It now brings together more than 700 organisations from across the UK.
