BUPA Care Homes today announced that it has acquired the Avalon group. The purchase takes BUPA up to 300 care homes and consolidates its position as one of the UK's leading care home operators.

Avalon currently has five homes on three sites in Solihull, West Midlands, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Bristol, with a total of 179 beds (94 nursing and 85 residential).

Under the deal BUPA Care Homes will acquire the business and trading assets of Avalon and has agreed a 35-year lease for the properties.

BUPA Care Homes Managing Director, Mark Ellerby said: "This is a high-quality group of care homes with committed staff, which will further strengthen our business and the purchase demonstrates our commitment to the long-term care sector in the UK.

"Our strategy is to extend homes where practical, build new homes where possible, and acquire homes where appropriate.

The purchase of Avalon will also help to improve the geographical coverage of our services.

"We look forward to working with our new colleagues to continue to provide the highest levels of care to our residents." Avalon Group was founded in 1991 with the purchase of The Priory, in Shirley, West Midlands.

The other homes in Bristol and Stratford- upon-Avon were acquired in 1998.
