Surrey women to plant garden at Chelsea Flower Show
Green-fingered, Surrey-locals, Christine Hawkins and Carmen Rodrigues have been given a once in a lifetime chance to help create a garden at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
Cleve West has proved that a garden can be both pleasing to the eye as well as practical and stimulating.
The man with the Midas touch, Cleve West, said: "After 10 months of planning and three weeks of hard work to create the garden, it's great to get this recognition.
It has been a real team effort and I'd like to thank everyone involved in bringing the garden to life, especially Bupa's gardening team and contractors Henley Salt landscapes." Bupa's head of mental health, Dr Graham Stokes, said: "Dementia is an issue of growing importance in the UK, with one in five people over 80 now affected.
For people living with the disease daily, who can't communicate as we do, sensory stimulation is invaluable.
The Bupa Garden highlights how use of soothing as well vibrant, tactile and perfumed plants and materials can be of real benefit.
"This has been the company's first venture at Chelsea and we have been hugely fortunate to have the skills of a designer who has been so willing to tailor his style to our challenging brief.
We have received overwhelmingly positive responses to the garden from visitors so far and are delighted to have achieved gold." The award-winning garden will be transferred to Meadbank Nursing Centre in Battersea after the show comes to an end and residents, staff and relatives are thrilled that their home has been chosen as the place where the garden will be permanently rooted.
