BUPA care worker wins an apprentice of the year award
A Bupa care worker has won a Learning and Skills Council's Apprentice of the Year South East regional award 2008.
Michelle Hooper, from Maypole Nursing Home in Southampton, competed with people from different vocations aged 14 to 65 years for the accolade and recently received her honour at an Oscars-style ceremony held at Ascot racecourse in Berkshire.
James Clegg, Bupa Care Home's head of people development, said: "Michelle's win is an acknowledgement of her personal commitment and determination.
It also reinforces our reputation as a people-focused employer who provides high quality learning opportunities, in order to ensure we give the best possible care to our residents.
She is a role model for others wanting to make an impact in the care sector." Michelle, 21, was chosen from over 300 applicants and comments: "I'm absolutely thrilled at the award - my job has given me fantastic opportunities for personal development and an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people I care for." Michelle was also one of 60 volunteers from Bupa chosen to help renovate Sarnelli House orphanage as part of the company's 60th anniversary Thailand challenge last year.
She added: "The wonderful experience in Thailand reinforced my wish to help others and work within the care sector." Presented by Matt Dawson, part of England's world cup winning rugby team and Charlotte Hawkins, Sky News presenter, the awards are designed to recognise and reward both employers and apprentices who successfully improve the working environment of their business.
