Three people from an Ilford nursing centre have been selected out of more than 55,000 Bupa employees worldwide to win a top award.

Donna Hunt, Lorraine Mackenzie and Susan Wilkinson from Bakers Court Nursing Centre in Ilford were presented with an Excellence award by Bupa's chief executive Ray King at a special ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London, alongside colleagues from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Copenhagen, Spain and the Middle East.

The awards are part of a programme called Bupa One Life, which is run across the organisation.

What makes the awards won by Donna, Lorraine and Susan so remarkable is the special way they care for residents even though none of the three are nurses or carers.

The committee behind the awards praised the way that Lorraine, the housekeeper, Donna, the centre's activity coordinator and Susan, who works in laundry services, have all gone above and beyond their roles in providing support and empathy to a resident facing the early stages of dementia.

Regional Manager for Bupa Care Homes, Kerry John said: "To have three people winning an Excellence award at one care home is a great honour.

We have all been inspired by their work in helping a resident needing additional support." Award winner Donna Hunt said they hoped that receiving the reward was one way of recognising all the great work that the staff at Bakers Court do every day to support and care for the residents.

"Firstly to receive a local award and then attend the awards ceremony was one thing, but then to be presented with an Annual Excellence award from hundreds of other nominations caught us by surprise, it was truly an amazing feeling," she added.
