A BUPA product story

Bupa UK Health Insurance has won praise from Business in the Community (BITC) for its donation of over 1,600 hundred man hours to community initiatives around the company's Salford Quays offices.

This incredible volunteering effort has led BITC to give Bupa its 2008 North West Cares Team Award.

BITC, a nationwide organisation of over 800 companies committed to improving their positive impact on society, were particularly impressed by the way volunteering and community relations sit at the heart of Bupa's management development programme.

For example, as part of the company's year-long leadership training scheme, called 'The Academy', Bupa employees take part in a wide range of fundraising activities, including quiz nights and charity football tournaments, as well community engagement projects, such as the redecoration of a local community centre.

Bupa's community projects also have an overseas dimension, in line with the company's growing international presence.

In 2007, 10 Bupa volunteers took part in a week-long expedition to Jaipur, India, where they tackled everything from teaching English to local children to constructing roofing to provide extra classroom space in a local school.

The team also shared their management expertise to help improve local business prospects.

Sarah Howe, chief marketing officer at Bupa UK Health Insurance, said: "This is a really fantastic award for our Health Insurance team and is testimony to the dedication, passion and motivation our people share in supporting local community projects." Bupa's volunteering activities are a part of the company's Community Connections programme, which aims to help and support the local areas where Bupa employees live and work.

Bupa will now go forward to the National BITC awards to be held later this month.
