BUPA leads on government call to help families find out more about dementia
More help is at hand for families with concerns that a loved one may be developing dementia, or who need to know more about how best to deal with the disease.
Bupa has just published a new advice booklet aimed at sharing more widely their expertise in providing personalised care for people with dementia.
The free 80-page guide provides advice on subjects ranging from: what to do if you suspect a friend or relative has dementia; managing finances; caring for someone with dementia; coping with behaviour we find difficult; right through to assisting with everyday issues such as washing, eating and drinking, dressing and personal care, enjoyable or calming activities and communication.
Bupa is the UK's largest provider of dementia care and has drawn on its wealth of experience to help guide people through what is often a difficult and stressful time.
In the last year alone, more than 3,000 Bupa carers have undergone specialist dementia-related training.
The Government's current consultation on its first dementia strategy called for improved public and professional awareness of dementia, and more good quality information for those with dementia and their carers.
The new booklet is one of the ways that Bupa is already working to deliver this goal.
Bupa Care Homes director, Dean Cowley said: "Every person with dementia is unique and every carer's situation is different but we hope that the booklet will provide people with the useful advice, information and support which is so often lacking.
"Many people are worried because they don't know what to do, or how to cope, when a friend or relative is first thought to have dementia.
"The booklet aims to guide people through what will be a challenging time - whether it is the difficulty many families encounter in gaining access to state support, or in simply coming to terms with the effects of the disease." One of the booklet's key messages is reminding families that they need to ensure their own health is maintained and it suggests ways for carers to look after themselves as well as the individual concerned.
In addition, the guide offers advice on when a care home may be appropriate, how to find the right one, and what to expect when visiting a friend or relative.
Copies of the booklet are available free from Bupa by calling :0800 00 10 10 or from our website: www.bupacarehomes.co.uk.
