Direct Line comments on possible two year jail sentences for drivers caught using mobile phones
Carmel McCarthy, Motor Spokesperson at Direct Line, said:
"The use of mobile phones whilst driving can be a major distraction and a serious threat to road safety.
Direct Line Insurance welcomes any guidelines that promote responsible driving as a positive move.
In February 2007, research by Direct Line showed that at any given time one million* UK motorists were using their handheld mobile phone whilst driving.
The implementation of stricter rules** and stronger penalties helps to heighten public awareness and reinforce the dangers of using electronic gadgets when driving." *There are 34 million drivers in the UK (Census data, 2001) and according to PCP Market Research, on average at any given time three per cent of all drivers use a mobile phone whilst driving.
Therefore, 33,809,493 x 0.03 = 1,014,284.
**The amended Highway Code 28th September 2007 outlined that drivers must not use a mobile phone in the car except to call 999 in a genuine emergency when unable to pull over.
The updated Highway Code also stated that satellite navigation systems can be a major distraction to drivers and drivers must exercise proper control of their vehicle at all times.
