Andrew Lowe, Direct Line's Head of Home Insurance, said:

"Following this morning's earthquake that affected various counties across England, Direct Line customers can be rest assured that their home insurance policy will cover them for any damages or losses caused by the quake.

";As ever, our main priority is to help people get back to normal as quickly as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience.

Our claims teams are available to provide help and advice to people on the steps that need to be taken in order to get their claims processed quickly." Direct Line offers the following advice to householders if they have been affected by the earthquake: Check immediately for any recent signs of damage to roof tiles, chimneys or walls.

Direct Line customers: If your property is damaged, please contact our 24 hour emergency helpline on 0845 601 3004 as soon as possible.

Take photographs of the damage to your building and contents or film the footage; they may help with the settlement of your claim.

Don't throw away possessions; they will need to be assessed.
