Jennifer Culley, spokesperson for Direct Line, said: "4x4 drivers are expected to be hit again as the Government ploughs on with their environmental drive to incentivise low-emission cars.
"However, latest research from Direct Line shows that 16% of drivers intending to buy a new car in 2008 will purchase a 4x4 or people carrier.
Will this figure change once people have assessed the impact of further penalties for owning a high-emission vehicle on their overall household expenditure?".
