Moneysupermarket.com comments on mobile phone deals for students

A Moneysupermarket.com product story

Rob Barnes, head of mobiles at moneysupermarket.com, said:

"When going away to University for the first time there are a number of things to think about, including ensuring you are on the right mobile tariff so you can keep in contact with family and friends at home as well as the new mates you make at university.

If want to talk and text a lot make sure you take out a contract that offers enough voice and text minutes, otherwise you will be hit with high out-of-bundle charges - this will cost much more in the long run.

A phone with a 2Meg or more digital camera is also a must for all those wild university parties.

For a great tariff and phone my tip would be Flext 35 from T-Mobile with a Nokia 6300.

The £35 tariff gives great value of £180 credit per month, with calls charged at 20p per minute and 10p per text, so there is no restriction on the mix of voice and texts.

"Students should also take a look at VoIP.

This will allow them to make calls for free via a laptop.

If you can arrange for your friends and family back at home to also get VoIP then you would have unlimited calls for the cost of the monthly fee.

For mobile and VoIP in one, you should consider 3's X series products.

For an extra £5 per month on any contract you can access Skype through the handset and make free calls, although this would only work if you have a wi-fi set up.".
