Talking about Northern Rock and the impact on the moneysupermarket.com website, Kevin Mountford, head of savings at price comparison website moneysupermarket.com, said:

"We have seen a huge surge in website traffic throughout the Northern Rock crisis, when the number of users searching for the best savings more than doubled".

"Not only this but mortgage traffic rose 50 per cent and loans requests by 30 per cent".

""We not only witnessed a high increase in the number of people researching on the site, but also transacting.

While price often plays a part in the decision making process, we saw a move towards larger brands such as HBOS and HSBC.

"However, following reassurances given by the government and a greater awareness of the compensation scheme, the shift seems to be going back to price, with moneysupermarket.com seeing tremendous interest in Bradford and Bingley's market leading 6.40 per cent product.".
