It is investing heavily in customer service with this level of financial muscle, it should also be stepping up with a market-leading tariff to steal the; march on British Gas, Scottish Southern and npower in their price war.

Its announcement that it will focus more on the environment is welcome, considering it currently emits 0.63 kilograms of CO2 per kilowatt hour -more than any of its rivals.

moneysupermarket.com is helping people ditch their expensive tariffs, and get the cheapest energy deal by offering L30 cashback to all customers swapping to a dual fuel tariff through its service.

Those changing their gas or electricity will get a single L17.50 payment.
