Young talent lines up to shoot Widow

Six young photographers vie for prestigious Scottish Widows calendar commission

Six talented young photographers are currently battling it out to win the prestigious Scottish Widows 2008 calendar commission, following the success of the first limited edition calendar launched last year The stunning 2007 calendar, shot by Scottish photographer David Boni, catapulted the photographer into the limelight and culminated in an exhibition of his work in London

The competition for the calendar commission was also welcomed by the photographic industry as a new, high profile annual platform for talent across the UK.

This year, to mark the 21st anniversary of the Widow, one of the UK's most recognisable brand icons, Scottish Widows chose to support young, up-and-coming photographic talent, with all six of the short-listed photographers under the age of 26, many of whom are recent graduates.

The photographers competing for the 2008 calendar commission were required to submit their creative interpretation of the brief based on the theme of portraiture, inspired by and featuring the iconic Widow.

Ideas range from the modern, to the surreal, to the metaphorical - all with the famous Widow as the central figure.

The images will be displayed at Scottish Widows' Edinburgh headquarters and staff invited to vote for their favourite.

The winning photographer will be commissioned to shoot 12 portraits featuring the Widow, played by Hayley Hunt, which will be produced as a limited edition calendar of only 500 copies.

Scottish Widows intends to distribute the calendar to only a carefully selected group of people, including celebrities, VIPs and industry experts.

Mike Hoban, Customer and Brand Marketing Director at Scottish Widows, said: "This is a really exciting opportunity for an up-and-coming photographer to make a mark on the photographic industry by interpreting the traditional icon of the Widow in an imaginative and creative way".

"Last year was a great success, but we're expecting even greater things from this year's results and believe that the 2008 calendar will become another 'must-have' item among consumers and professionals alike." For 2008, the six short-listed photographers are: Christopher Heaney, 25, graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2004 where he won awards for his photographic work.

Since graduating, Christopher has worked commercially for leading organisations and has shows planned for 2007 in Glasgow and Israel.

Now based in London, Jo worked as a photographic assistant before going solo last year.

She regularly shoots for national magazines as well as working on documentary projects both in the UK and abroad.

Katkina Goldberg , 25, is studying 3rd year photography at Edinburgh College of Art.

She won Nikon's competition for young photographers 2004 and last year won the (Olmec) Digital Photographer of the Year.

He graduated with BA Hons in Photography from Fylde College in 2003, and has since established himself as an award-winning photographer based in London.

She graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design with BA (Hons) in photography and has since been working as a freelance photographer.
