Up Close and Personal with the Widow

Scottish Widows launches exclusive calendar for 2008

A unique, limited edition 2008 calendar shot by a young, up-and-coming photographer has been released today by Scottish Widows to 500 key financial, political and media figures The commission for the calendar, which features twelve portrait shots of the Widow and follows in the footsteps of the hugely successful 2007 edition shot by David Boni, is swiftly becoming a highly sought after commission in the photographic industry

The winning photographer is Paul Plews, a 26 year old recent graduate who beat six other short-listed young photographers to the job with a modern take on the Scottish Widow which imitates classic portraiture masterpieces.

Paul shot the calendar this summer on a five-day shoot with the new Widow, Hayley Hunt.Paul, who impressed the judges with a creative interpretation of the portraiture brief, said: "This was a fantastic opportunity to interpret a traditional, iconic figure in a creative and imaginative way.

Everyone knows what the Scottish Widow looks like, but I wanted to show an intimate, soft, 'off duty' side to her; to show her in personal situations and to develop her character a little so that we feel we know her a little better." Mike Hoban, Customer and Brand Marketing Director of Scottish Widows, said, "This year's calendar is particularly stunning - Paul's interpretation of the Scottish Widow is artistic and contemporary, while still appreciating the traditional qualities we all associate with her.

"With each year the calendar gathers credibility within the industry, featuring in publications such as The Daily Mail and The Times, and Paul's images will only help to continue this success further.

Because of its exclusivity it has also become something of a sought after item - this year we've had many requests from people asking to be put on to the distribution list." The final selected calendar photos have been described by Ian Farrell, editor of Professional Photographer magazine, as 'captivating and incredibly artistic shots which show a personal, intimate side to the Widow never before witnessed.'.
