It is also adding heat to the online market by introducing new online discounts, making it the cheapest online provider in 8 energy regions.4 However, the moves are a pre-emptive strike, as Powergen has confirmed to uSwitch today that wider price cuts can be expected 'shortly'.
Geoff Slaughter, Product Manager at uSwitch.com, the independent online switching and comparison service, says: "Powergen is hitting straight back at British Gas with this guarantee and setting a challenge to all the other providers who have yet to make a move.
With British Gas' market share falling to 48%5, Powergen has spotted a chink in British Gas' armour and is attempting to thrust home its advantage.
"It is also taking the online price war to the regions.
It is now the cheapest online provider in 8 regions, whereas British Gas is cheapest in 6.4 The message for consumers is coming in loud and clear - the market is being shaken up, but the best deals to be had are still online.".
