Aron Thompson, Head of Insurance at uSwitch.com, responds to figures released today by Scotland Yard which reveal a growing number of young drivers arrested in the UK for driving whilst over the

"The figures released today by Scotland Yard, which indicate that drink driving amongst 17-24 year olds is on the increase, will be a major issue for those that are prosecuted when they try to renew their car insurance".

"Recent research from uSwitch.com revealed that young drivers typically pay ?9481 for car insurance which is already more than double the average UK premium of £409".

"Given how expensive insurance is for this group, to risk increasing this by anything up to another 55%3 due to a conviction could become an unmanageable financial burden in the future".

"However, with a quarter of all arrests for drink driving involving younger drivers, we are concerned that the threat of inflated car insurance premiums is just not enough of a deterrent.

Young drivers would benefit a great deal if the penalty for being 'slightly' over the limit was much tougher.

This would send a much clearer message to young drivers and avoid any confusion as to how much they can safely drink and still be in control of their car as well as being law abiding motorists.

For many motorists it is important to remember that drink driving is not just limited to driving whilst under the influence of alcohol as many drivers will still be over the limit the day after a heavy night on the booze".

""As well as the potential of having a ban imposed on them for drink driving, younger drivers will also be penalised by insurers for up to five years if they are convicted for a drink driving offence".

"In year one following a conviction, a young driver would pay ?995.454 more for their car insurance".

"As with all insurance quotes, following a conviction the cost can vary considerably from provider to provider".

"In some cases, these young drivers that have had a drink driving conviction may not be able to find a new insurance provider as they present such a high risk".

"However, if you have been convicted of drink driving, it's always worth shopping around several providers to get the right policy at a competitive deal." For more information visit www.uSwitch.com Or call 0800 093 06 07.
